The Athletic Exec Dir Steven Ginsberg said hiring several former Washington Post journalists last week “seemed like a great opportunity” to expand their existing coverage of D.C.’s Commanders and Wizards, and renew the Nationals beat, according to Patrick Hruby of the WASHINGTONIAN. Ginsberg noted he “started reaching out, talking to people” at the Post when they made their announcement about their sports department and “it all came together -- I wouldn’t say easily, but somewhat quickly.” Ginsberg worked at the Post for nearly 30 years, including a stint overseeing its sports section, before joining The Athletic and said he knew the six “well as journalists, and also as former colleagues,” so it was “not hard to immediately have a sense of who was well-positioned to help us expand our coverage.” Ginsberg said the hires “reflect our ambition.” Ginsberg: “We have always been the place to go for your local teams. In DC, this will help us provide the premier coverage in the area. But we are also a national sports outlet -- we do nationally-based investigations, nationally-focused opinion” (WASHINGTONIAN, 3/2).
