N.Y. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that the Trump administration’s plan to increase the amount of ICE personnel in the city would “ruin the spirit of the World Cup,” according to Josh Wingrove of BLOOMBERG NEWS. President Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, appearing on Fox on Monday said, “You’re going to see more ICE than you’ve ever seen in New York City, and it’s coming. I just reviewed an operational plan.” Wingrove notes the World Cup is “expected to draw thousands of foreign visitors” to the N.Y. metro area, which is hosting several matches including the final (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 6/8). Mamdani in a post on X wrote, “Soccer would not exist without immigrants. Immigrants play and coach the game, work in the stadiums, fill the stands, and make celebrations like the World Cup possible. Six of the players on the US Men’s National Team are immigrants. We will not allow ICE or anyone else to sow fear in our communities -- especially at this moment. As the world comes to our city, we will stand proudly with our immigrant neighbors and reject these attacks for what they are: an attempt to divide us” (X, 6/8).
