This Week in History: Turner buys the Braves

January 6, 1976  -- Media mogul Ted Turner purchases the Braves for a reported $12M. Turner used the Braves as a major programming draw for his cable network TBS, making the Braves the first franchise to have a nationwide audience and fan base. TBS marketed the team as “The Atlanta Braves: America's Team.” Under Turner the Braves won the 1995 World Series. Time Warner would acquire the Braves in 1996.

  • January 7, 1927 -- The Harlem Globetrotters play their first game in Hinckley, Ill.
  • January 8, 1980 -- The NCAA decides to sponsor women’s championships in five sports (Acrobatics/Tumbling, Triathlon, Stunt, Equestrian and Wrestling).
  • January 8, 1984 -- The NCAA announces that the men's basketball tournament will expand to 64 teams in 1985.
  • January 9, 1811 -- The first recorded golf tournament for women only is held in Scotland.
