January 27, 1894 -- The Univ. of Chicago beats Chicago YMCA 19-11 in the first basketball game to feature a college team. The Univ. of Chicago would play a seven game season in 1894, winding up with a 6-1 record. The formation of the Univ. of Chicago basketball team came three years after James Naismith invented the game at YMCA International Training School (now known as Springfield College) in Springfield, Mass., in 1891.
