Biden meets with Griner's family

President Biden on Friday met with family members of WNBA Phoenix Mercury C Brittney Griner for the “first face-to-face encounter that the president has had with the relatives.” Administration officials have said that the meetings were "not an indication that negotiations with Russia for their release have reached a breakthrough.” National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said that Russia has "not responded to what administration officials have called a substantial and serious offer" to secure Griner's release. Biden “met with Cherelle Griner, the wife of Brittney Griner, as well as the player’s agent, Lindsay Colas." Cherelle in a statement “thanked Biden for the meeting” (AP, 9/18).
