The University of North Carolina at Charlotte today shared new renderings of its $60M expansion of Jerry Richardson Stadium, designed by SLAM and McMillan Pazdan. The project is adding an upper deck to the south side of the 11-year-old stadium. Charlotte, which only began competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2015, joined the American Athletic Conference last year; its membership was in part contingent on expanding its football stadium capacity.
The project, built by Barton Malow, should break ground in mid-2025. The addition will include new luxury suites, club seats, loge boxes, and ledge seats, and additional general seating for fans. The school is opening a sales center in uptown Charlotte; Legends is selling the new premium for the 49ers athletic department. Charlotte will continue playing the next two seasons at the stadium while work proceeds. The new capacity, when the project is complete by late summer 2027, will be just over 18,000 (up from 15,314).
