U.S. Sens Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) wrote a letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino urging the governing body "not to pick Saudi Arabia as the 2034 World Cup host next month" in a decision largely viewed "as inevitable." The senators wrote in the letter, "we urge you to seek out a host country with a record of upholding human rights." The letter said FIFA approving Saudi Arabia as a host "endangers workers, athletes, tourists, and members of the press, and it runs counter to FIFA's own human rights policies." Saudi Arabia has been the lone candidate for hosting the 2034 World Cup since FIFA fast-tracked the nomination process in October 2023 (AP, 11/25).
