Virginia AD Williams inks five-year extension

Univ. of Virginia AD Carla Williams has signed a contract extension that runs through May 2030 and increases her guaranteed annual compensation by 29%, bringing that figure to $1,405,470. The new deal "breaks Williams’ yearly pay into four categories" -- $650,907 in base salary; $495,563 in licensing payments; $250,000 in deferred compensation and a $9,000 automobile allowance. Williams is also "eligible for annual performance bonuses" up to $300,000. Other bonuses include $250,000 "if she completes the contract term" and 3.5% of her base salary and licensing payments, $40,126, "if Virginia’s football team makes a bowl" and an additional 3.5% "if the Cavaliers finish among the top 10 nationally in the Directors’ Cup all-sport standings." Williams -- a finalist for SBJ Athletic Director of the Year in 2024-- became the first Black woman to lead a power conference athletic department when she was hired in 2017 (Norfolk VIRGINIAN-PILOT, 1/16).
