ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter joined the CNBC Sport videocast this week and discussed the number of “untapped areas” of sports where he might want to expand his coverage portfolio, pointing specifically to golf. Schefter: “I think more and more people are playing fantasy golf, betting on golf. ... And so to me, there’s a space there. The football space is so saturated right now. There’s so many reporters in there. There aren’t many people on other lines of work. So these are things I’ve thought about, too.” Earlier this year, Schefter expressed a desire to expand into other areas, and this week he said he even considered taking the reins of the NBA beat from now-St. Bonaventure men’s basketball GM and former colleague Adrian Wojnarowski. Schefter: “Big stories are big stories, whether they’re in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, whatever it may be. And so, I believe that if I wanted, I could go try to replace -- I would never be Woj, but I would do it the way that I would. ... And I think I could do that job in a more than competent way.” Schefter noted that while it “never came up with ESPN beyond a peripheral conversation or two,” it “would have been really cool to just be an insider for all sports.” Schefter added that if Wojnarowski “had waited until our contracts were up together, which we did our deals together, I would have been interested in that.” Schefter: “But he went early. So it’s not feasible when ... I’ve got the golden handcuffs on the football beat” (“CNBC Sport,” CNBC.com, 4/9).
