The NCAA has filed a trademark for the phrase “battle in the bubble” that would enable it to sell branded merchandise (such as clothes, shoes and hats) that pertain to potential NCAA competitions held in a bubble environment.
The Aug. 26 filing indicates plans for the NCAA to eventually host competitions in a bubble during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, it does not specify which sport—or sports—would be played in such an environment. B ubbles have been successful for pro sports leagues, including the NBA, WNBA, NHL, MLS, NWSL, and the Premier Lacrosse League.
In addition to clothing, the NCAA’s filing seeks trademark protection for multimedia programs and websites related to athletic contests and events. It is not exclusive to any one sport. The NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors already announced that all D-I fall championships (other than football) will be postponed until the spring.
