A's ballpark item not going on November ballot

The Oakland City Council voted against putting the "controversial Howard Terminal ballpark site" for the A's to voters. The measure "would have put on the November ballot a non-binding advisory measure to determine whether public funds could be allowed to be spent on infrastructure and other costs." Council member Noel Gallo, sponsor of the item, said that it "came on request from the public to make sure that citizens of Oakland would not be held responsible for cost overruns, revenue shortfalls and other unforeseen expenses during the 10-year development process." The measure "came up for action" after 10:00pm PT. Concerned citizens "waited in line for as long as seven hours to have their say and were impassioned on both sides" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 7/6).
