Sources: Portland could get WNBA expansion team

The WNBA made the Warriors’ WNBA expansion franchise official today, and it could be adding another team to Portland, as sources tell The Athletic that “the city is under strong consideration by the WNBA to get an expansion franchise.”

In February, Portland billionaire Kirk Brown, who made his fortune off an exit from ZoomInfo (which he originally co-founded as DiscoverOrg), "expressed interest in funding an expansion team,” per the Oregonian. The Athletic report pegs Brown as the leader of the bid and that The Next said “that Portland talks have reached the WNBA Board of Governors, which must give approval for a team to be added.”

If awarded, the Portland franchise would be the WBNA’s 14th franchise.
