Cities without a Big Five Team: No. 13 Lake Placid, New York

The state of New York put more than $500 million over six years into the Lake Placid Olympic Complex, enabling the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics to continue as a major factor in global winter sports event hosting and making it more open to year-round use by locals, including youth. The complex includes a rare world-class sliding facility for bobsled, skeleton and luge, and Herb Brooks Arena, one of several ice sheets. — B.M.
