The WASHINGTON POST's Frederic Frommer goes with, "Sports Illustrated’s debut was a risk. It turned into an American gem." Sports Illustrated made its debut 70 years ago last week amid a "fair number of doubters." The first issue, dated Aug. 16, 1954, featured Milwaukee Braves star Eddie Mathews on the cover. It ran 144 pages and cost 25 cents. Sports Illustrated debuted in a "far different athletic landscape." Despite some "early struggles," the magazine "benefited from societal changes the year it launched."
