Michigan fired football coach Sherrone Moore “for cause” amid an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” UM AD Warde Manuel in a statement said, “Following a university investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.” UM associate head coach Biff Poggi “has been appointed interim coach, effective immediately.” Sources said that after “becoming aware of the allegations against Moore, prominent Michigan donors cooled on contributing to the program.” Moore, who just completed his second season as UM coach, previously served a suspension this season for his “involvement in the Wolverines’ sign-stealing scandal, which gripped college football and put Michigan under significant scrutiny over the last three years” (CBSSPORTS.com, 12/10). There are currently “no public details about the inappropriate relationship Moore was involved in” (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 12/10).
Following his firing Moore was “detained by police, arrested and booked in Washtenaw County Jail” in “an alleged assault investigation.” Police did not share much information, but said “a suspect in this case was taken into custody,” while also adding the incident “didn’t appear to be random.” According to police, the incident occurred at 4:10pm ET yesterday. Michigan announced that Moore had been fired in an email to the media at 4:43pm (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 12/10).
