As the dust settles from Derek Jeter's revealing that he will step down from the Marlins, one report states the Baseball HOFer "had grown frustrated" at club Owner Bruce Sherman’s "hesitation to spend bigger in free agency for veterans to augment the youthful roster and accelerate the turnaround." The Marlins gave P Sandy Alcantaraa five-year, $56M extension this offseason, and signed RF Avisail Garcia to a "big free agent deal before the lockout began, but otherwise have been mostly frugal." The team’s player payroll was $61M last year, ranking 27th of 30 teams. All the while, Jeter watched NL East rivals like the Mets and Braves "spend big in free agency while the Fish relied so heavily on their low-salary prospects becoming stars" (MIAMI HERALD, 2/28).
Heard Jeter believed going into the lockout that there would be another $10M-$15M that the Marlins would spend on the 2022 roster, and that strategy evaporated during the lockout. It was central to Jeter’s decsion to leave as CEO.
