GOLF WORLD's John Hawkins writes of the PGA Tour potentially moving The Barclays from Westchester Country Club and offering the club a $1M buyout of its contract, Westchester "should take its million and go back to sleep. A membership evenly divided [about whether the club should host a PGA Tour event] is not going to provide the support or muster up the ambition necessary for an undertaking such as this. Hosting a tour stop is a hassle. A ton of prestigious clubs aren't interested, but there will always be plenty that are." Westchester President Phil Halpern expressed "surprise and deep disappointment" about the potential move, but Hawkins notes the '09 Barclays is already scheduled for Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey, and the Tour's "long-term plan was to develop a rotation of venues in the New York area, so he should have seen this coming" ( GOLF WORLD, 1/18 issue ). ADD AGE? A NASCAR source yesterday said that NASCAR is "considering raising the minimum age for drivers in the Sprint Cup Series to 21." Currently, drivers must be 18 to compete in the Sprint Cup, Nationwide or Truck series, and if NASCAR makes a change in the Sprint Cup it would not alter the age limit for the other two series ( CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 1/17 ). GOING UP : The Duramed Futures Tour, the official development circuit for the LPGA Tour, has “followed up its recent move into the LPGA’s Daytona Beach [HQs] by scheduling a 2008 tournament" at LPGA International's Legends Course on April 4-6. The Daytona Beach Duramed Futures Classic is the second of 18 on the '08 tour schedule, and has a total purse of $100,000, with $14,000 going to the winner. Futures Tour President Zayra Calderon indicated that the tournament name may change between now and April "depending on the ability to find a title sponsor" ( Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 1/16 ).
