Monahan Sees Legal Betting As Way To Bring Fans To PGA Tour

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan believes legal sports betting has the ability to draw more people to the game, which is one reason the Tour has been "spending a lot of time trying to figure exactly how we're going to go forward." Monahan, during an appearance on CNBC on Friday, said, "When done the right way -- and it will be done the right way -- it has an opportunity to pull more people into our sport. That's why we've been pretty vocal on our support." Monahan noted the Tour is always looking to increase "fan engagement" and noted many people who play golf recreationally "get a little more engaged in your round of golf" if they have bets riding out their rounds with their playing partners. Monahan: "Look at a PGA Tour (event) -- you've got at any given time 78 balls in the air at one time. Most other sports, you have one. So there's a complexity, there's a richness to our data" ( "Squawk Box," CNBC, 9/21 ).
