FIFA's Infantino Announces His Opposition To La Liga Games In U.S.

La Liga's plans to host a Girona-FC Barcelona match in the U.S. "hit another stumbling block" when FIFA said it "opposed the idea," according to REUTERS. The Spanish Footballers Association (AFE) "opposed the idea from the off" and FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Friday "also rejected the idea, saying league matches had to be played on home soil." The decision was a "further blow" to La Liga President Javier Tebas, who said in September that he was "90 percent sure" the game would take place in the U.S. La Liga is "expected to appeal" FIFA's opposition ( REUTERS, 10/26 ). The BBC noted La Liga had "agreed to play one game a season" in the U.S. as part of a 15-year deal with Relevent Sports. Girona and Barcelona had "agreed to move their game" despite opposition from the AFE ( BBC.com, 10/26 ).
