Germany Delays Return of Fans to Bundesliga Soccer Matches

German health ministers have agreed to extend the country’s spectator ban at Bundesliga matches until at least the end of October. The Bundesliga was the first major soccer league in Europe to resume play in May after being suspended more than two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other large events will also remain banned in Germany through October. The 2020-21 Bundesliga season is scheduled to begin on Sept. 18 and conclude in late May.

“We feel that we need to stay vigilant. In the current situation, spectators in the stands would be the wrong signal,” Jens Spahn, Germany’s Federal Minister of Health, said in a tweet.
