Cal men’s basketball coach Mark Madsen said the school is “close to breaking ground” on a $80-100M practice facility. Madsen told CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein that there is money that has “already been committed and some other donors are in the process of stepping up.” Madsen: “Shortly you’re going to see an image of our athletic director and some of our players and our coaching staff with shovels breaking ground here at Cal for an unbelievable, state-of-the-art practice facility that will probably be at the top of facilities nationally” (“College Hoops Today with Jon Rothstein,” 5/8). In Utah, Trent Wood noted news of the new practice facility is "evidence of the excitement that now surrounds the Cal program with Madsen at the helm.” It also is “particularly notable given Cal’s financial woes in recent years.” The school at one point “had six consecutive years of deficits, where it lost $14.7 million annually on average” (DESERET NEWS, 5/8).
