Athletes not allowed to appear in online gambling ads in Ontario

Athletes will not be allowed to “appear in commercials promoting online gambling in Ontario” as of the end of February, and Hockey HOFer Wayne Gretzky, Oilers C Conner McDavid and Maple Leafs C Auston Matthews are among the “high-profile athletes who have starred in recent online sports-betting promotions” that will be affected, according to DeClerq & Morris of CTV NEWS. Neither active nor retired players may be used in “advertising and marketing for Internet Gaming in Ontario, with the exception of advocating for responsible gambling practices.” Criticism has grown about the “notable rise of online gambling advertisements, especially during live sports.” It was cited that one game from the Panthers-Maple Leafs playoff series this spring had “nearly eight and a half minutes of advertisements … dedicated to online sport gambling” (CTV NEWS, 8/29).
