The Giants honored late Baseball HOFer Willie Mays last night at Oracle Park with a pregame tribute before manager Bob Melvin and all his players and coaches "wore No. 24 jerseys to honor" the legacy of one of baseball's greatest players. On the 24th day of the month in the year 2024, the crowd "stood for a moment of silence" prior to first pitch. The tribute involved three Giants broadcasters -- Duane Kuiper, Mike Krukow and Dave Flemming -- "sharing Mays stories from in front of the mound." The idea for every Giant to wear 24 last night "was pushed" by senior director of operations, marketing and retail Gavin Werner and clubhouse manager Brad Grems (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/24).
The Giants are "planning to have a public celebration of Mays' life in the near future." Yesterday, there was "a tribute to Mays painted behind home plate" and his No. 24 was "mowed into the center field grass" (NBCSPORTSBAYAREA.com, 6/24).
"Say Hey, Willie Mays. The best there ever was."
