JLL’s focus on the sports industry took a more intense turn following its contributions to The Battery project in Atlanta, which showcased the real estate stalwart's mixed-use advisory capabilities. That effort was led by David Demarest, who, in effect, became the head of the company’s sports practice when it decided to take on more sports projects. Since then, JLL has been involved with teams in every major sports league, including representing the Baltimore Orioles in their Camden Yards lease extension and Miller Sports + Entertainment’s bid to land a Major League Baseball franchise in Salt Lake City. JLL doesn’t invest in projects, but does nearly everything else, from market analysis and development advisory to negotiating venue leases, helping clients navigate the capital markets and project management. — B.M.
