La Liga has "won a court battle over the commercial rights to the term 'El Clasico'" against clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona, the two teams who comprise the rivalry. Madrid's Audiencia Provincial court "ruled against a bid" from the two teams to "trademark the term 'El Clásico' as it conflicts with the trademark 'ELCLÁSICO,'" which La Liga registered in May 2023. The clubs have the option to appeal the decision. This marks the latest court battle between the two clubs and La Liga "over which commercial rights belong to the individual clubs and which can be collectively wielded by the governing body" (THE ATHLETIC, 1/31)
