The White Sox “congratulated” newly elected Pope Leo XIV on the video board at Rate Field as “the South Side’s very own” before Friday’s game against the Marlins. A “small but appreciative crowd” gave the message on the video board “a nice ovation.” The message from the White Sox came after the Cubs originally claimed Leo XIV as a fan. White Sox SVP/Community Relations Christine O’Reilly-Riordan said, “I don’t call it a troll. I call it an ‘ahem’ moment. [The Cubs] did their thing, and we were just like, ‘Ahem …’ That’s all we had to do. We gave them an ahem and walked away with our heads held up really high, with a lot of pride.” She added, “We work with folks from the Cubs. I haven’t heard from them specifically about this, but I’ll tell you what, I’m proud to own this.” The message to Leo XIV came after a tribute to late MLBer Chet Lemon (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/9).
