Milestone moments in Thomas Bach’s tenure as IOC president

Dec. 2014: IOC passes Agenda 2020 reforms, setting forth a strategic vision for Bach’s time as president.

2014: NBC signs $7.65 billion extension for the Games through 2032; in 2025 it signed a four-year, $3 billion extension through 2036.

July 24, 2016: Following a WADA investigation showing widespread doping in Russian sport, Bach and the IOC opt against banning the country and leave eligibility decisions to the federations, marking the first of five Games in which Russia was sanctioned by WADA or the IOC for doping or other offenses.

Aug. 21, 2016: IOC launches the Olympic Channel.

July 11, 2017: IOC opts to double award the 2024 and 2028 Games after several cities drop out, awarding the events to Paris and Los Angeles.

June 23, 2019: IOC opens the Olympic House as its new headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

March 24, 2020: Bach and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe postpone the Tokyo Games.

March 2021: IOC adopts Agenda 2020+5 reforms.

Nov. 16, 2021: IOC issues new transgender athlete policy, leaving policy and eligibility decisions to international federations but encouraging inclusion.

Oct. 15, 2023: IOC members encourage Bach to seek a third term, a move that would have required revising the Olympic Charter.

Aug. 11, 2024: Bach announces he will not seek a third term.
