MLB will host the third annual HBCU Swingman Classic tonight at 7pm ET at Truist Park, the first event of MLB All-Star Week.
Baseball HOFer Ken Griffey Jr. helps lead the effort with his “Swingman” brand attached to the event name. He also serves on the selection committee to choose fifty of the top baseball players currently playing for Historically Black Colleges and Universities to participate in the game.
MLB SVP/Baseball Development Del Matthews described Griffey’s involvement in the event, saying, “Ken Griffey Jr. has lent his name, has been a participant and has rolled up his sleeves to really make this happen. It’s just a great opportunity for the kids.”
Matthews also expressed particular excitement for this year’s event taking place in Atlanta, where he believes they will be able to connect culturally to a city rich in civil rights tradition.
“Now coming to Atlanta -- really the heart of HBCUs and where [Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.] went to school. ... We’ve been able to engage the community and build on what we’ve done in the last two years.”
The event is presented by T-Mobile, who also is the presenting sponsor for the MLB Home Run Derby. Matthews shed insight on their participation in the event, noting they became involved early-on for the inaugural event in Seattle in 2023.
“T-Mobile has been a great partner,” Matthews said. “They contribute to the game as a sponsor, but behind the scenes, they’re creatively coming up with concepts and ideas and engaging the student athletes ... and just looking to promote HBCUs, HBCU culture and student athletes. We couldn’t ask for a better partner.”
Matthews noted Chevrolet, Nike and Marucci are also involved as partners. Nike will provide uniforms, while Marucci will supply bats.
The event will include marching band performances and a step show from the Divine Nine.
