Navy is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the military branch with its uniforms for the Army-Navy game on Dec. 13 at M&T Bank Stadium, with the USS Constitution “heavily referenced for design details and inspiration,” according to Bill Wagner of the Annapolis CAPITAL GAZETTE. The uniforms, designed by Under Armour, feature a wordmark and number font “inspired by the typography found throughout the ‘Act to Provide Naval Armament’ document.” Embedded into the sleeves and collar are “six total ropes, which represent the original six frigates and mimic the ornate detailing found throughout the USS Constitution’s bow.” The upper back of the jersey feature as eagle and six stars, which “mimic the decoration of the USS Constitution’s stern.” The American flag is “incorporated onto the wearer’s left sleeve,” while the right sleeve “integrates a unique ‘USN’ monogram.” Embroidered on the interior back neck is “USN 250.” The helmet’s copper color “represents the copper-plated sheathing from the under hull of the boat.” The left side of the helmet features the USN in “monogram copper and outlined in dark navy,” while the right side has the USS Constitution “hand-painted on stone colored parchment paper” (Annapolis CAPITAL GAZETTE, 11/18).

BE ALL YOU CAN BE: ESPN.com noted Army’s uniforms, via Nike, also will “take on something of a throwback theme, paying tribute to the Army’s 250th birthday.” The uniform features a “marble base color on the jersey and pants,” which is a “nod to the marble headstones at Arlington National Cemetery.” The numbers and typography are “themed on the United States Constitution, with hints of purple throughout.” Purple was originally used for the Military Badge for Merit in the Revolutionary War, and now it is the color of the Purple Heart. This year will mark the Black Knights’ “first all-white look for Army-Navy since the program’s 2021 jerseys” (ESPN.com, 11/12).
