Track and field stars are “among the 20 biggest creditors still collectively owed millions by the Michael Johnson-led Grand Slam Track league,” according to Matt Lawton of the London TIMES. GST filed for bankruptcy in a court in the U.S. last week, following a refusal by vendors to accept a deal for 50% of invoices submitted before the end of October. Detailed in documents filed on Monday to the bankruptcy court in Delaware is a “list of creditors who have the 20 largest unsecured claims.” A broadcast company is “still owed more than” $3M, and “below them is a list of Olympic and world champions who were apparently attracted by the promise of unprecedented levels of prize money and appearance fees.” In October, they received 50% of “what they were owed by GST for competing in the three meetings that did take place in Kingston, Miami and Philadelphia.” Gold Medal-winning U.S. hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is still owed $356,250, while Silver Medal-winning British runner Josh Kerr is “still waiting on” $218,750. Gold Medal-winning U.S. runner Gabby Thomas is owed $249,375, while Gold Medal-winning U.S. runner Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Bronze Medal-winning Brazilian hurdler Alison dos Santos are each owed $190,625. Gold Medal-winning Dominican runner Marileidy Paulino is owed $211,875. The money owed to those top 20 creditors “amounts to close to” $10M, with the documents detailing that there are “in fact between 200 and 999 creditors owed somewhere between” $10M and $50M (London TIMES, 12/15).
