Reds' Nick Krall to lead baseball operations, keep GM title.... Saints keeping Sunday's game at Superdome.... Unconfirmed positive COVID test within NFL Panthers
Reds Elevate GM Nick Krall To Lead Baseball Operations
Reds GM Nick Krall today was "named the new head of the Reds' baseball operations department." He "will keep his same GM title," but will now report to Owner Bob Castelliniand "assume the duties" of former President of Baseball Operations Dick Williams, who resigned earlier this month. Krall, who "just completed his 18th year in the organization," became GM in May '18. Following Williams' resignation, the Reds are "eliminating the president of baseball operations role," bucking "one of the baseball trends that grew throughout the last decade" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 10/19).
Saints Will Play Sunday's Game In Mercedes-Benz Superdome
Sunday's Panthers-Saints game "will be played" in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome "as planned." The Saints have "discussed with LSU officials the possibility of playing future home games at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, where fans would be allowed to attend at 25% capacity." But the "quick turnaround time and LSU's home game against South Carolina on Saturday night made playing the Panthers game there logistically impossible." Barring a compromise or policy change from New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, the Saints' "earliest chance to play home games in front of a significant crowd" will be against the Falcons on Nov. 22 (TWITTER.com, 10/19).
Panthers Working Remotely After Unconfirmed Positive Test
The Panthers had an "unconfirmed case of COVID-19 on Monday morning," and as a result required their staff and players to work virtually. The team will "remain in intensive protocol out of an abundance of caution." Panthers coach Matt Rhule said that he "learned of it" at 4:48am ET. The unconfirmed positive test "will not impact early voting at Bank of America Stadium" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 10/19).
Wyndham Drops Sponsorship Of PGA Tour Top 10 Program
Wyndham has dropped its sponsorship of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Rewards Top 10 program. The program pays $10M in bonuses to the 10 players who ranked in the top 10 of the FedExCup standings during the Tour’s season. The Tour will continue the Top 10 program and expects to announce a new sponsor in the coming months. Wyndham began its sponsorship in the rewards program in '19.
The company will continue to keep its title sponsorship of the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro. Its current title sponsorship deal runs through '26. The Tour in a statement said it fully supports Wyndham's "decision to focus solely on this long-standing event that has made such an impact in central North Carolina. We look forward to the continued growth and success of the Tour Top 10 program and expect to have further information in the coming months." Golf News Net first mentioned the possibility of Wyndham dropping the deal.
Sources: Erik Jones To Replace Bubba Wallace In RPM's No. 43
NASCAR driver Erik Jones is finalizing a deal with Richard Petty Motorsports to wheel the No. 43 car in '21, sources say, making him the expected successor to Bubba Wallace. Jones is currently with Joe Gibbs Racing but is being ousted after this season to make way for rising driver Christopher Bell, so Jones and his reps have been in the driver market for a couple months. Sources say they have landed on the car made famous by Richard Petty, part owner of the team alongside majority owner Andrew Murstein.
Terms of Jones’ new deal were unclear, but a formal announcement could be imminent. Wallace is vacating the No. 43 after this season, his second with RPM, and next year is joining the new Michael Jordan-Denny Hamlin team, which has filed for trademarks associated with the name 43XI Racing.
William & Mary To Reinstate Women's Sports It Had Cut
William & Mary Univ. has agreed to reinstate its women's gymnastics, swimming and volleyball teams, develop a Gender Equity Plan and come into full compliance with Title IX by the '22-23 academic year to avoid being sued. This according to Bailey Glasser, the law firm representing women student-athletes at the school. William & Mary in September announced plans to eliminate the three women's programs, plus men's gymnastics, swimming and track & field. Then-AD Samantha Hugehas since resigned over the controversial decision; Jeremy Martin is interim AD (THE DAILY).
