Last week’s Preakness Stakes NFT launch auctioned off 33 individual NFTs for a total $700,000. The most valuable NFT in the offering was an animation of a racehorse from blockchain-powered horse racing simulator Zed Run, which was paired with a valuable Zed Run horse and sold for $160,000. A digitized replica of the Woodlawn Vase came with a physical replica trophy and two VIP tickets to next year’s event, altogether selling for $104,000. The NFT of Saturday’s race, which was billed as the quickest a live sporting event has ever been converted to and sold as an NFT, was bought for over $60,000.
Seven of the NFTs, including the Woodlawn Vase and the recording of Secretariat’s '73 victory, were bought for nearly $300,000 by Hong Kong-based crypto platform CoinUnited.io, which also invested some $700,000 in the recent Warriors NFT series. The Preakness NFT series was produced by Medium Rare, which was also behind NFT launches for the Warriors and Buccaneers TE Rob Gronkowski.
