The Giants and Cardinals will officially take part in MLB's 2024 Field of Dreams game, which will be played at Rickwood Field in Birmingham on June 20. Rickwood is the "oldest baseball park in America" and was "once the home field for a young Willie Mays when he performed with the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro Leagues." The Birmingham City Council last week approved $553,447 to "renovate Rickwood" (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 6/20). MLB said that the date of the game at Rickwood was "intended to coincide with Juneteenth" and that the game would feature a "variety of activities to celebrate the history of the Negro leagues and Mays" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/20).
The first two Field of Dreams games in 2021 and 2022 took place in Dyersville, Iowa, "on the field featured in the popular baseball film Field of Dreams." There is "no Field of Dreams game scheduled for this season," reportedly due to an $80M "construction project at the Iowa field" (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 6/20).
