Britain and Ireland are "close to dropping plans" to bid for the '30 World Cup and are instead aiming to host Euro '28 after "receiving advice from senior figures in international football" that a bid for the FIFA tournament would be "too risky." There are fears that a British and Irish bid for '30 "would be torpedoed by political deal-making" and FIFA's aim of taking the World Cup to new territories. English FA President Prince William has also stated that he would be "reluctant to become involved in a World Cup bid if there was a high chance of losing again," after his negative experiences campaigning for England to host in '18. Although a final decision "is yet to be made by the four home nations and Ireland," a Euro '28 bid instead of a World Cup one "is now looking odds-on." A decision "has to be made before March" (LONDON TIMES, 1/5).
