Newcastle names Dan Ashworth director of football

Dan Ashworth has agreed to become the director of football at EPL side Newcastle United and resigned from his position at Brighton & Hove Albion. Ashworth was "first approached to take a senior position at Newcastle in December." He accepted that offer last week and has been "officially put on gardening leave by Brighton." Ashworth was previously the FA’s director of football and has "played a key part in strengthening Brighton’s position as a progressive club" since he joined them in '19. It is not yet known when Ashworth will be allowed to take up his role at Newcastle. The club just spent £90M ($122M) during the January transfer window without a CEO or a director of football. Brighton will replace Ashworth with former Everton D David Weir as acting technical director (LONDON TIMES, 2/7). Under "Ashworth's stewardship at the FA," England's youth teams won the men's U20 and U17 World Cups and the U19 European Championships, all in '17 (BBC, 2/7).
