NBA OFFICIAL MIKE MATHIS PLEADS GUILTY, RESIGNS FROM LEAGUE

The NBA announced that veteran official Mike Mathis has
pleaded guilty to a felony tax charge and has resigned from
the league's officiating staff. Mathis had been an NBA
official since the '76-77 season, and worked 11 NBA Finals
and two All-Star Games in his career (NBA). Mathis faces
"up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine," according
to John Erardi of the CINCINNATI ENQUIRER. He was charged
with understating his income by $69,000 from '89-92. He
"admitted trading in first-class airline tickets provided by
the NBA for cheaper, coach-class tickets and pocketing the
difference." No sentencing date was set (ENQUIRER, 2/21).
