TNT NASCAR Sprint Cup Ratings, Viewership Decline From '08

By Austin Karp , Assistant Managing Editor TNT's six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series telecasts concluded this past Saturday night, and the net felt the effects of declining NASCAR viewership this season. TNT's six telecasts averaged a 3.9 cable rating and 5.098 million viewers, down 7.1% and 10.9%, respectively, from a 4.2 rating and 5.722 million viewers for its six telecasts a year ago. TNT also averaged a 4.2 cable rating for its six races in '07. The net's telecast from Infineon Raceway was the most-viewed race this season, after the Coke Zero 400 took the top spot last year. One bright spot was the telecast from New Hampshire, which to date is the only NASCAR Sprint Cup broadcast to see a ratings increase in '09. The TNT Sprint Cup races also slipped somewhat this year in their ranking among other cable programming. In '08, during their respective weeks, the TNT Sprint Cup telecasts ranked as cable's most-viewed telecast three times, and never ranked lower than third. This year, a TNT Sprint Cup telecast never finished higher than fourth in a given week. Last weekend's telecast from Chicago ranked as the 11th-most viewed telecast on cable. Last year, the race was the week's third-most viewed telecast on all of cable. NOTES : All ratings are live+same-day. (a) = Race was run on July 4th in '09 and July 5th in '08.
