The NFL's recent deal to make Subway its official QSR"probably explains" why Patriots coach Bill Belichick was in Connecticut last month "filming a commercial" for the brand, according to Ben Volin of the BOSTON GLOBE. The sandwich chain "will be associated with the league’s youth initiatives -- the sponsor of the NFL Flag football league and a supporter of its NFL Play 60 campaign." Volin: "My middle-aged dad take: Couldn’t they have found a healthier sponsor than Subway?" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/2). In Boston, Greg Bedard noted Belichick's appearance benefited his self-titled foundation, which provides coaching and mentorship to young players. Belichick: “I had never done anything like that … we mentioned on the BBF website, it’s a difficult environment to raise money for charity and foundations, opportunity to spend a day to fund the initiatives in the foundation for student-athletes and other sports programs. … Appreciate the opportunity Subway gave me. It was a fun commercial to do. Everybody loves sandwiches. I know I’ll get killed in the rookie shows" (BOSTONSPORTSJOURNAL.com, 7/31). In Boston, Jim McBride noted a video of Belichick shooting the ad was "popular on social media" when it surfaced in July (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/1).
