Monumental Sports Furloughs More Than a Third of Its Staff

Monumental Sports & Entertainment has indefinitely furloughed 232 of its full-time employees, joining a large list of sports organizations to cut staff payroll due to the economic challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

MSE owns the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the NBA’s Washington Wizards, and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. According to The Washington Post, affected employees will be paid through Oct. 16. More than one-third of the company’s full-time staff has been furloughed, including employees across sales, marketing, game day operations and community relations.

“[Our furloughs] include employees whose job responsibilities have been affected by the hiatus and caused by the pandemic. We’re making changes today to protect the long-term viability of the company, preserve the ability of the business to be operational and successful when we return to normal,” Monica Dixon, MSE’s chief administration officer and president of external affairs, told The Post.
