Phelps, Sharapova Among Star Athletes Joining Online Education Startup

The Skills, a new online education platform that launched this week, gives pro athletes such as Michael Phelps, Maria Sharapova and Shaun White an opportunity to teach fundamentals of their sport and other life lessons that have contributed to their success.

The Skills launched with 10 athlete instructors. Other athlete instructors include Olympic volleyball star Kerri Walsh Jennings and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion, will serve as The Skills’ chief athletic officer, while Fitzgerald will advise the company on growth and diversity.

Classes are on-demand via computer or smartphone, with subscriptions starting at $69 per year. The platform will have longer classes that contain 20-plus sessions and 100-plus total minutes of video content, as well as short-form video lessons released weekly.

Users can browse videos based on a specific sport or athlete. Lessons cover topics such as teamwork, motivation and building confidence.
