Microsoft has acquired Smash.gg, an online platform that organizes esports tournaments. Smagg.gg employees will join Microsoft and continue operating its platform under the Microsoft Content Services team.
Founded in 2015, Smash.gg manages tournament sign-ups and administration. The company originally focused on Super Smash Bros. competitions before expanding to other gaming titles. Microsoft’s latest dip into esports comes after the tech giant shut down its gaming streaming platform, Mixer, in June.
“We’re excited to take the next step in that journey by joining Microsoft to help strengthen our existing relationships and explore new opportunities. Smash.gg will continue as a self-service esports platform available to tournament organizers from all game communities,” reads a statement on Smash.gg’s website .
