As part of its relationship with Amazon Web Services, the NHL will debut two new areas of advanced analysis during the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Building on data collected from the past 10 years in the league’s real-time Hockey Information and Tracking System (HITS), as well as the new puck and player tracking technology, AWS has helped the NHL develop new shot and save analytics.
The shooting metrics will include data on high shot-to-goal conversion rates from different spots on the ice and show how they change during power play situations. The save analytics will also pare down raw data into granular scenarios, such as shot location and type of save (stick, glove, pads, etc.).
The new analytics will only be available via broadcasters during this year’s playoffs, but they will become publicly accessible on NHL.com in the future.
