Reactions roll in following removal of Staples Center signage

The removal of the iconic Staples Center signs earlier this week generated plenty of reactions on TV yesterday, with some funny and serious comments. ESPN's David Jacoby: "People are upset about this like they're emotionally attached to Staples. It's just a place where you buy office supplies. ... Have you been to Staples? There's nothing emotional about Staples at all.” ESPN’s Jalen Rose: “Stadiums change their names all of the time. ... If you love Staples so much you should go support them and they wouldn’t have to sell the rights” ( “Jalen & Jacoby,” ESPN2, 12/7). ESPN’s Stan Verrett said when the Lakers play the Nets on Christmas Day, the venue will become Crypto.com Arena after its 20-year, $700M naming rights deal. Verrett: “We trust that that’s actual dollars and not cryptocurrency” ( “SportsCenter,” ESPN, 12/8). NBA TV’s Isiah Thomas was talking about last night’s Celtics-Lakers matchup at Staples Center and asked, “Is it still Staples Center or it is Bitcoin now?” Thomas: “I’m going to still call it The Forum.” But NBA TV’s Matt Winer noted, “That’s a different building” ( “Gametime,” NBA TV, 12/7).
