Carlos Beltran's new front office gig with Mets still unknown

Former MLBer and YES Network analyst Carlos Beltran is "moving into a front office role" with the Mets this season and while that role is "still unknown, moving from the broadcast booth to a club role is a solid get for the Mets," according to Abbey Mastracco of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Mets owner Steve Cohen and his wife Alex have "made a concerted effort to repair fractured relationships with former players" and their actions "have not gone unnoticed." The team had a "need in their front office for someone with playing experience" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 2/6). USA TODAY's Steve Gardner noted even without "landing his biggest target," Cohen spent nearly $500M "on free agent contracts this offseason." Cohen has had to "deal with criticism" from other owners who "point to the huge discrepancy between the high- and low-payroll teams as bad for the game." The "bottom line" is that Cohen is "willing to spend money to make money." Similar to the hedge fund he runs, Cohen "sees it as a relentless pursuit to find value" ( USA TODAY, 2/6 ).
