Mavericks F Dirk Nowitzki last night announced his retirement in a "poignant postgame ceremony following a night in which fans celebrated his career, along with a victory" over the Suns. Nowitzki said, "It's been an amazing ride." He assured fans that "he will remain in Dallas." Video tributes "highlighted many of Nowitzki's greatest achievements." There were "surprise appearances" by Charles Barkley , Larry Bird , Scottie Pippen , Detlef Schrempf and Shawn Kemp ( DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 4/10 ). Tributes "flowed and so did the tears." In Victory Plaza outside the arena, the Mavericks "threw a party for fans, who praised Nowitzki's loyalty and humility" ( DALLASNEWS.com, 4/9 ).
