Olympic women's soccer final moved to evening

SBJ Live From Tokyo

The Olympic women’s soccer final match between Canada and Sweden "has been moved from Friday morning in Tokyo to the evening in Yokohama." There were "concerns about playing in the heat" with an 11:00am local time kickoff in Tokyo's National Stadium, and the "final couldn’t be played there later in the day due to the venue being used for track and field." The Yokohama venue, about an hour outside Tokyo, is "also staging the men’s final Saturday night." The announcement was made today at Sweden’s pre-match news conference (AP, 8/5).

Meanwhile, the USWNT beat Australia 4-3 to win the Bronze Medal at the Tokyo Games, as Megan Rapinoe scored twice and Carli Lloyd "set the U.S. women’s record for most career Olympic goals." This was "only the third time" since the '91 Women's World Cup and '96 Atlanta Games that the USWNT "had failed to make the final," but it "at least avoided being shut out like it was in Rio" in '16, when it lost in the quarterfinals (USA TODAY, 8/5).
