First all-women crew to ref men's World Cup match

History will be made Thursday at the FIFA World Cup, as the referee crew of Stephanie Frappart, Neuza Back and Karen Diaz "will become the first all-women refereeing team for a men's World Cup match." The trio have been "named to take charge" of the Costa Rica-Germany Group E match, FIFA announced yesterday. Frappart will be the main referee "as she reaches another milestone" after being the first female "to officiate at a men's World Cup qualifier in March and Champions League match" in 2020. The 38-year-old Frappart will be joined by the Brazilian-born Back and Mexico's Diaz as assistants (ESPN.com, 11/29).
