Osaka's U.S. Open Win Marred By Serena-Umpire Controversy

Emotional displays and an accusation of sexism "overshadowed a remarkable victory" by Naomi Osaka over Serena Williams in yesterday's U.S. Open women's final, which featured a "series of confrontations" between Williams and chair umpire Carlos Ramos . The post-match celebration was "tarnished by the angry booing from fans upset over what they perceived as Ramos' unfair treatment of Williams" ( N.Y. TIMES, 9/9 ). During the trophy ceremony in Arthur Ashe Stadium, thousands of fans "jeered repeatedly" as Osaka and Williams, who fell short in her "bid for a record-tying 24th Grand Slam trophy, cried." Williams put an arm around Osaka and said to the crowd, "Let's be positive. So congratulations, Naomi. No more booing." Osaka then addressed the crowd: "I'm sorry. I know that everyone was cheering for her. ... Thank you for watching the match." The WTA released a statement "urging celebration of both players while saying, 'There are matters that need to be looked into'" ( ESPN.com, 9/8 ). Williams was fined $17,000 by the USTA for her "outburst" ( WASHINGTONPOST.com, 9/9 ).
Many observers "believed Osaka was robbed of a true celebration" ( USA TODAY, 9/9 ). The trophy ceremony was a "pitiful scene" ( N.Y. POST, 9/9 ). Never has an umpire "so wrecked a big occasion" ( WASHINGTON POST, 9/9 ). NEWSDAY goes with the header, "U.S. Open Deserved A Lot Better Than Controversial Women's Final" ( NEWSDAY, 9/9 ). Yesterday's match was "one of the most controversial Grand Slam finals in recent years" ( WASHINGTON POST, 9/9 ).
