Dr. Céline Gounder, the widow of soccer journalist Grant Wahl, pens an essay for the N.Y. TIMES about her husband, who died while covering the World Cup in Qatar back in December. Gounder writes she knew that "disinformation purveyors would blame Grant’s death on Covid vaccines,” and she “knew what tactics they would use to do so.” She added, “I also know that debunking what these people believe head-on in public risks giving them the attention they crave and invites further trolling.” When “disinformation opportunists recently used the same playbook” to blame Bills S Damar Hamlin’s in-game cardiac arrest on Covid vaccines, “the dam broke.” Gounder: “I will continue to honor Grant by living by our shared values. I’m channeling my grief into something productive: protecting the public’s health against those who would profit from the suffering of others” (N.Y. TIMES, 1/8).
