Ford Field getting new turf in time for 2023

Ford Field will be "switching from a slit-film turf to a monofilament field turf," considered the "most grass-like surface" of the three kinds of turf used in NFL stadiums. Installation, originally scheduled for 2024, "is scheduled to begin this month as part of a package of stadium enhancements." The Lions said the decision was made to move installation up one year "once it became unlikely that we would host a home playoff game this year." Ford Field is "one of six NFL stadiums that currently use slit-film turf," along with U.S. Bank Stadium, MetLife Stadium, Caesars Superdome, Lucas Oil Stadium and Paycor Stadium. MetLife Stadium "also plans to change playing surfaces" this offseason (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 1/6).
